Impact & Need

The Need

A cancer diagnosis touches every part of life—not just for the patient, but for the entire family. Alongside medical treatment, families benefit from time and space to reconnect, restore, and focus on what matters most: being together. These moments of respite can play a powerful role in helping families cope, build resilience, and move forward with strength.

Cancer diagnoses in people younger than 50 are on the rise. As the importance of whole-person care continues to gain recognition, there is a growing opportunity to expand access to supportive experiences like respite. As described in The ASCO Post, Whole Health is an approach that shifts the clinical focus from “What’s the matter with you?” to “What matters to you?” This shift engages clinical care beyond the traditional individual disease-alone–focused appointment and incorporates community building through group experiences. Today, these services are often limited in scale and availability, even as more clinicians and families seek them out. At the same time, For Pete’s Sake has seen firsthand how meaningful and lasting the impact of respite can be, conducting a research study and publishing our own ASCO abstract in 2020. For more than 25 years, For Pete’s Sake has delivered Respite Experiences that support families across multiple dimensions of health—mental, physical, family, psychosocial, spiritual, and financial.

By creating a dedicated Cancer Respite Center, For Pete’s Sake will expand its reach to thousands more individuals each year while also providing a purpose-built environment where its full model of care can be experienced as intended. Every space, program, and interaction is designed to reflect the FPS Family Health Model, ensuring families receive comprehensive, coordinated support throughout their stay. After the respite ends, families stay connected through an immersive Alumni program.

Pete’s Dream represents an important step forward in redefining what supportive cancer care can look like, offering families a meaningful opportunity to heal, connect, and find strength together.
